THE RULES THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

clear and engaging story about a worker, their boss, work rules, and the effects of following—or breaking—them:

THE RULES THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Kwesi had been working at Sunrise Electronics for almost two years. He liked his job—fixing circuits, troubleshooting machines, and helping customers who needed quick repairs. But there was one problem: Kwesi didn’t like rules. He felt they slowed him down.

His boss, Madam Adjoa, was the opposite. She believed rules were the backbone of good work.
Every morning she repeated the same statement:

“Good work comes from good discipline.”

Kwesi often rolled his eyes but kept quiet.

THE FIRST WARNING

One Tuesday, Kwesi arrived late for the fourth time in a week. He rushed into the workshop without signing the attendance sheet. He also forgot to wear his safety goggles. To him, these were “small things.”

But to Madam Adjoa, they were dangerous habits.

She called him into her office.

“Kwesi, you are a good worker,” she said gently, “but ignoring small rules can lead to big problems.”

Kwesi nodded, but deep down he thought she was exaggerating.

THE INCIDENT

A week later, while fixing a customer’s faulty power supply, Kwesi again worked without his protective goggles. He thought the repair would be quick.

But suddenly BOOM!
The capacitor burst, sending sparks into the air.

Kwesi jumped back, covering his face with his hands. Luckily, he wasn’t hurt badly, but a spark scratched the skin near his eye. If it had hit a little higher, the damage could have been serious.

When Madam Adjoa heard the noise, she rushed in.

“Kwesi! This is why we have rules!”

He looked down, ashamed.

THE TURNING POINT

The next day, Madam Adjoa didn’t shout. She simply placed a pair of safety goggles and a printed sheet of work rules on his desk.

“These are not punishments,” she said.
“They are protections. For you, for the customers, and for the company.”

Kwesi finally understood.

From that day:

  • He arrived on time
  • He signed the attendance sheet
  • He followed all safety procedures
  • He double-checked his work before handing it over

Slowly, his work improved. Customers requested him by name. Madam Adjoa trusted him more. He even trained new staff, teaching them the same rules he once ignored.

THE EFFECT

Months later, during a staff meeting, Madam Adjoa smiled proudly.

“Kwesi is an example of what happens when we follow the right rules,” she announced.

Kwesi felt proud. He realized something powerful:

Rules don’t stop you.
They protect you, guide you, and help you grow.

And from that day, he promised himself never to underestimate workplace rules again.
