 FORMAL COMPLAINT REGARDING THE ALLEGED ASSAULT OF CIVILIANS BY SOLDIERS IN CHEREPONI TOWN

Subject: Complaint Concerning the Alleged Assault and Injury of Civilians in Chereponi

We wish to formally bring to the attention of the appropriate authorities a serious incident involving soldiers who entered Chereponi town and allegedly assaulted some civilians.

According to reports from residents, some civilians were beaten by the soldiers, resulting in injuries to some of the affected individuals. The reported reasons for the confrontation included motorcycles being ridden with excessively bright or improperly adjusted lights, as well as some motorcycles allegedly being used without lights.

While we understand the importance of road safety and enforcing the law, we believe that enforcement should be carried out in a lawful, respectful and proportionate manner. Physical assault of civilians should not be used as a means of enforcing road-safety rules.

We therefore respectfully call on the appropriate authorities to:

1. Investigate the incident thoroughly and impartially.

2. Establish exactly what happened and identify those responsible for any unlawful conduct.

3. Ensure that civilians who sustained injuries receive appropriate assistance.

4. Take appropriate action if any personnel are found to have acted outside their lawful authority.

5. Ensure that future enforcement exercises in Chereponi are conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law.

6. Engage with community leaders and residents to prevent similar incidents from occurring again.

The people of Chereponi deserve to feel safe and protected while also respecting the laws of Ghana. We therefore appeal to the North East Regional authorities, security leadership and all relevant institutions to treat this matter seriously and ensure that justice and peace prevail.
